This website is a collection of images of freshwater and terrestrial algae (apart from diatoms) of the United Kingdom - Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) and Northern Ireland. Also included are taxa from slightly brackish-water environments and marine blue-green algae. The only colourless forms considered are all dinoflagellates (pyrrophytes).
The database originates from a collaborative project between The British Phycological Society and the Natural History Museum, London. The main outcome was The Freshwater Algal Flora of the British Isles (2002), edited by DM John, BA Whitton and AJ Brook and published by Cambridge University Press. It is accompanied by a CD-ROM of algal images and habitats compiled and edited by PV York, DM John and LR Johnson.
