Historical survey collections

National Museums Scotland has collections from the following important historical expeditions in its Natural Sciences Collection:

Scotia expedition(s) collection

  • Specimens were collected during the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition 1902-1904, on the research ship Scotia. W S Bruce was the driving force behind this expedition.
  • Includes dried as well as alcohol preserved material (vertebrates and invertebrates) published in the Scotia Reports.

Rattlesnake expedition collection

  • The surveying expedition of HMS Rattlesnake to New Guinea and Australia (1846-1850) is famous since Thomas Huxley was the surgeon on board and it formed the foundation for his scientific career.
  • Edward Forbes mentored Huxley's marine biological work and described the mollusca from the Rattlesnake expedition.
