GTI Programme of Work

The GTI Programme of Work was agreed at the sixth meeting of the Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2002.

The Programme of Work consists of 18 planned activities grouped under five operational objectives. The operational objectives and the planned activities relevant to each objective are listed below.

Operational objective 1

Assess taxonomic needs and capacities at national, regional and global levels for the implementation of the convention.
1: Country-based taxonomic needs assessments and identification of priorities
2: Regional taxonomic needs assessments and identification of priorities
3: Global taxonomic needs assessment
4: Public awareness and education

Operational objective 2

Provide focus to help build and maintain the human resources, systems and infrastructure needed to obtain, collate and curate the biological specimens that are the basis for taxonomic knowledge.

5: Global and regional capacity-building to support access to and generation of taxonomic information
6: Strengthening of existing networks for regional cooperation in taxonomy

Operational objective 3

Facilitate an improved and effective infrastructure/system for access to taxonomic information, with priority on ensuring countries of origin gain access to information concerning elements of their biodiversity.

7: Develop a co-ordinated global taxonomy information system

Operational objective 4

Within the major thematic work programmes of the convention include key taxonomic objectives to generate information needed for decision-making in conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and its components.

8: Forest biological diversity
9: Marine and coastal biological diversity
10:Dry and sub-humid lands biodiversity
11: Inland waters biological diversity
12: Agricultural biological diversity
13: Mountain biological diversity

Operational objective 5

Within the work on cross-cutting issues of the convention, include key taxonomic objectives to generate information needed for decision-making in conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and its components.

14: Access and benefit sharing
15: Invasive alien species
16: Support in implementation of Article 8(j)
17: Support for ecosystem approach and work under the Convention on Biological Diversity on assessment including impact assessments, monitoring and indicators
18: Protected areas
