Introducing science at the Museum

by Professor Richard Lane the Museum's Director of ScienceĀ
What is our science for?

As public resource, the research goals we are pursuing at the Museum are for the benefit of the nation, human society and the natural world of which we are part.

Our scientists, aided by our collections, are seeking to understand the natural world and the processes that generate diversity. This knowledge is needed to help us tackle current challenges such as potentially catastrophic biodiversity loss caused by climate change and habitat destruction.

Our three strategic objectives are to:

  • develop our collections as a scientific infrastructure that meets current and future needs
  • generate new knowledge through internationally competitive research
  • work with others to share our knowledge and information resources, thus enhancing our value and impact
