This is a group of mainly small butterflies. There are more than 5,000 described species, with many new species still awaiting discovery.

Lycaenidae have various common names including:

  • blues
  • coppers
  • hairstreaks

Some of the smallest butterflies in the world are lycaenids, with wingspans of as little as 12mm.

They are also good environmental indicators as many species of Lycaenidae have very fine environmental niches and a relationship with both specific plants and ants.
