Auchenorrhyncha

Auchenorrhyncha are a suborder containing approximalty 30,000 species. They are plant feeding bugs including the well known spittle bugs, lantern bugs and the vocal cicadas.

Well-known species

Spittle-bugs are best known by their nymphs that protect themselves by frothing excreted sap until the insects themselves are entirely hidden.

Cicadas are known for their songs and subterranean larvae that can live underground for many years.
