Polar bryozoans

We are using bryozoans to predict the impact of global warming on rapidly changing polar environments.

Many bryozoan genera survive in extreme polar conditions. But these regions are changing fast in response to global warming.

We are studying the response of bryozoans to change, and assessing the extent of environmental change in local environments.

Our projects include:

Diving for bryozoans in Antarctica

Diving for bryozoans in Antarctica is frosty work!

  • Creating web tools for identification and biodiversity studies of polar bryozoans, including the Atlas of Arctic Bryozoa and the Atlas of Antarctic Bryozoa.
  • Studying the different mineral compositions of bryozoan skeletons, and how these compositions are influenced by ocean acidification and temperature.
  • Investigating other aspects of bryozoan biology, such as their life history and associated responses to environmental change.
