Conulariid research

Conulariids are an extinct group of jellyfish with pyramidal skeletons of calcium phosphate that are locally abundant in Palaeozoic sediments.

The Museum holds the second largest collection of conulariids in the world. It is unrivalled in terms of diversity and geographical spread.

To enhance the scientific value of this collection, research is being undertaken into various aspects of conulariid taxonomy and palaeobiology, including:

  • the microstructure of the shell
  • developmental loss of symmetry
