TheMuseum is a busy scientific research institution. Each of the seven scientific departments is highly productive and publishing performs a key role in passing on the work that is undertaken.

Approximately 1,000 publications are produced annually, of which about half are peer-reviewed. (Peer-reviewed articles have, before publication, been examined by other scientists and researchers in that speciality.)
Publication data gives details of author, with Natural History Museum scientists in capitals, date of publication, title, journal (in italics) or publisher, volume and pagination.
