Groups

There are two major groups of seed plants - angiosperms and gymnosperms.

Angiosperms

  • are often called the flowering plants
  • undergo double fertilization
  • have seeds enclosed with a structure called a carpel
  • include all flowering plants

Gymnosperms

  • have no enclosing carpel - name means ‘naked seeds’
  • do not undergo double fertilisation
  • include cycads, conifers, yews and oddities such as Welwitschia
