There are two major groups of seed plants - angiosperms and gymnosperms.
Angiosperms
- are often called the flowering plants
- undergo double fertilization
- have seeds enclosed with a structure called a carpel
- include all flowering plants
Gymnosperms
- have no enclosing carpel - name means ‘naked seeds’
- do not undergo double fertilisation
- include cycads, conifers, yews and oddities such as Welwitschia
