3 cm long wind-dispersed seed of Acer pseudocampestre. This fossil is from the Oligocene of Preschen, Bohemia in the Czech Republic.
The earliest seed plants were the seed ferns (pteridospermatophytes), an extinct group which evolved in the late Devonian around 370 million years ago.
