Unusually within the Botany Department, diatom research covers both extinct and extant taxa. It utilises both fossil and preserved material as well as living material in the form of cultured collections.
This project aims to increase our understanding of the biodiversity and global distribution of the Pleurosigmataceae diatom family.
This research seeks to improve our understanding of diatoms’ unique wall and ultimately use this to produce a revised classification for naviculoid diatoms.
A series of Botany Department projects address the systematics, evolution and biogeography of freshwater diatoms.
