Habitats

Bryophytes colonise diverse substrates around the globe, surviving in sub-Polar, temperate and tropical environments.

Habitats include:

  • Damp shady environments
Bryophytes are generally at their most abundant and diverse where moisture is readily available.
  • Harsher, dryer environments
Species that have evolved to cope in these conditions are often among the first to colonise exposed habitats such as brick walls, newly disturbed soil or rock.
  • Higher plant substrates such as tree trunks and branches
These can provide important habitats. Some species won’t grow anywhere else.
  • Decaying wood, rock or soil
