Bryophytes colonise diverse substrates around the globe, surviving in sub-Polar, temperate and tropical environments.
Habitats include:
Damp shady environments Bryophytes are generally at their most abundant and diverse where moisture is readily available.
Harsher, dryer environments Species that have evolved to cope in these conditions are often among the first to colonise exposed habitats such as brick walls, newly disturbed soil or rock.
Higher plant substrates such as tree trunks and branches These can provide important habitats. Some species won’t grow anywhere else.
