Algologist Juliet Brodie has been appointed a member of an independent Scientific Advisory Panel for the selection of Marine Conservation Zones. Announced on 1 December 2009, this panel is one of the first steps the Government has taken to implement the Marine and Coastal Access Act.
Professor Brodie has extensive knowledge of the taxonomy, distribution and importance of algae and the activities which impact upon it. She has over 25 years experience as a marine scientist, and her work has included the identification of sites of importance for seaweed and other algae.

Also in December 2009, Professor Brodie became the President of the Systematics Association. She will hold this post for 3 years, for the 1st year alongside her Presidency of the British Phycological Society.
Sandy Knapp was the recipient of the Sir John Burnett Medal, awarded in November by the National Biodiversity Network Trust.
