Mining

Consulting services

Mineral science is fundamental to understanding the chemical and physical properties of minerals that may form the ore, concentrate or waste product of a particular mine or potential mine. A better understanding of these parameters will lead to more favourable and environmentally sustainable exploitation and waste technologies being devised. This work has also been shown to be helpful in the development of mineral-specific instrumentation that can be used in more focused exploration programmes.

The Natural History Museum is able to deliver a range of specialist consultancy, research and education services to the mining sector. Expert geological and geochemical staff support these services using modern, state-of-the-art analytical laboratories, opened in 1998, which contain a full-range of facilities. The Museum holds extensive reference collections of well-characterised minerals, ores and rocks and has one of the best Earth Science reference libraries in the UK.

We can offer assistance in:

  • detailed characterisation and interpretation of materials (eg minerals, rocks, ores, concentrates, waste products and water

  • on-site geological evaluation of mineral deposits with follow-up laboratory studies

  • background research into mineral deposit occurrences based on extensive reference collections and library at the Museum

  • technical Due Diligence studies of mineral exploration and evaluation projects

  • in-house teaching seminars for industrial or academic audiences illustrated with extensive rock and mineral collections

  • training of technical staff in mineralogical techniques either for commercial or institution based clients

  • services ranging from short-term advisory work to longer on-going commissioned research projects tailored to specific client needs
