Interesting specimens

The Museum’s flea collections holds some surprises including examples of:

  • the largest species flea found in the UK and Europe, the mole flea
  • the largest species of flea in the world, the mountain beaver flea
  • and of the smallest species of flea, the cat flea
Dressed fleas

The collection also boasts the famous dressed fleas

  • a peasant couple, on display at Tring
  • a set piece of two brides and bridegrooms with a Mexican Mariachi band

The tiny figures, which are only about 5mm tall, are crafted from pieces of cloth and paper and the fleas are placed on the top to form the head of the figures. They are best viewed under high magnification to appreciate the amazing detail.
