Collections Management and Curation

Lepidoptera specimens are carefully preserved in a variety of ways:

  • dried specimens mounted on pins– for the majority of adult Lepidoptera
  • as microscope slides – for dissected body parts (eg genitalia), wing preparations or whole body
  • preparations of small specimens
  • preserved in fluid, especially for Lepidoptera larvae
  • boxed items – with leaf mines or plant galls formed by Lepidoptera larvae, preserved in herbarium sheets
