Collections management and curation

The Museum’s diatom collection consists of over 300,000 specimens.

Specimens are stored either:

  • in boxes – if fossils
  • mounted on glass slides – over 150,000 of them. At least 5,000 are confirmed type specimens.
  • in bottles
  • on herbarium sheets – in the case of older material

There is an active programme to database the collections and the associated information such as notebooks.
