Research visiting hours and restrictions

Arrival time

If you are visiting the department to carry out research, you will need to arrange an arrival time with the staff member specialising in your field who will act as your host. When speaking to your host please let us know if you have any special access requirements - using a wheelchair, for example.

Maximum visitor numbers

Since demand for access to some collections is extremely high, it may be necessary to limit visitors to a maximum of five people in any one section. This is to ensure everyone has enough working space and that the host has the time to provide the support to ensure your visit is productive.

Closed sections

Major curation projects may require us to close sections of the collections. We will make sure that as much notice as is practicable is given both in team members' emails and on the relevant departmental section web page. Please see the relevant section’s page for closure dates.

Out of hours access

The department is open from 10.00-16.00, Monday to Friday.

Access outside these hours is at the discretion of your host and is not guaranteed. The collections and library facilities are not open at weekends or public holidays. Special access can be arranged if necessary, at the discretion of the individual collection manager or host.
