Zoology specimen catalogue
Part of the zoology collection information is held on the Museum’s electronic collections management system, and can be accessed using the online zoology specimen database.
We are actively working to add more specimens to the database so more records will be available soon. If you spot any mistakes, please contact the relevant curation team.
Fish
The Fish Group has their entire collection databased. Access this either through the zoology specimen database by selecting Pisces under Curation group.
Picture Library
The online Picture Library holds over 40,000 images of:
- natural history specimens and documents from the Museum’s collections
- the natural world
- the Museum’s iconic buildings
If you require an image for research purposes and it is not available, you can submit a request that our in-house photographers will take to your specifications. For specimens this will be in collaboration with the department’s curators.

Database templates
If you prepare a database of part of our collection while visiting or borrowing material from us we will ask you to use a template that is compatible with our electronic collections management system. This will enable us to import the data.
