There are 100,000 curatorial units in this collection.
There are approximately 5,000 primary type specimens in this collection.
Specimens are mainly preserved in 70 to 80 per cent ethanol (the number of specimens per
unit is variable) or mounted on microscope slides, a few are dry mounted
(pinned).

Collection Content: The entomology collection of Arachnida and Myriapoda comprises an
estimated 100,000 curatorial units of which there are 5,000 primary specimens
represented.The Class Arachnida consists of spiders, scorpions, harvestmen, whip
spiders, whip scorpions, pseudoscorpions, solifugids, schizomids, ricinuleids,
palpigradids, mites and ticks.Other specimens include the Class Merostomata (horseshoe crabs),
Subphylum Myriapoda (centipedes, millipedes, paurapods, and symphylans),
Subphylum Pentastomida (tongue worms), Phylum Onychophora (velvet worms) and
Phylum Tardigrada (water bears).Specimens date from about 1825 through to the present. The collection
includes primary types of William Elford Leach, Charles Athanase Walckenaer, E. Keyserling and
Carl Ludwig Koch as well as Charles Darwin's spiders and mites collected on the
voyage of the Beagle.Although the geographic range of the collection is world-wide,
Europe, Central America, tropical Africa, South East Asia and Australasia are
particularly well represented.
Physical Arrangement:
The collection is arranged taxonomically.
The millipede and scorpion collections are arranged according to
Hoffman (1979) and Lamoral (1975).
