I am a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, and a member of the Meteoritical Society and Geologists' Association.

International Research roles

I was a member of six of the seven preliminary examination sub-teams for the NASA JPL/Caltech Stardust Discovery class mission which collected and returned to Earth the first cometary dust samples. Results from this work were published in Science, December 2006.

I am a member of the Science Council, and leader of the sub-team responsible for preliminary examination of interstellar particles captured on aluminium foils during the orbits of the Stardust mission, prior to return to Earth.

I am frequently invited to give presentations of my research work on cometary dust to learned, scientific and public societies and associations.

In the main part of my job, I maintain analytical electron beam instruments and develop analytical and imaging protocols to meet the specific and very diverse needs of individual researchers the Natural History Museum (for example: automated collection of large scale, montaged cathodoluminescence images; selection of lesser-used X-ray spectral intervals for resolution of peak overlaps in complex materials; stereo imagery at low magnification of uncoated samples). I use Alicona MeX software at NHM for the reconstruction of three-dimensional models from SEM images, and collaborate extensively with equipment manufacturers, especially Oxford Instruments and XRT Ltd, feeding back information about performance limits and suggestions for system development and improvement. I foster cross-laboratory and multi-technique links with a large number of organisations, especially for technologies not currently available at NHM, such as: focused ion beam microscopy (FIB); analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM); secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS); laser Raman spectroscopy, and particle-induced X-ray emission analysis (PIXE). I source, prepare and characterise analogue mineral materials for use worldwide in hypervelocity impact experiments and for inter-laboratory cross-calibration (e.g. for TEM, Raman spectroscopy, SIMS analysis, synchrotron X-ray fluorescence (SXRF) analysis, etc).

Research

Interests

 

My main research interests lie in the analysis and interpretation of mineral materials from a wide range of origin, particularly extraterrestrial sources. Most of my research work is collaborative with American and European space agencies and university departments, and concerns meteorites, dust collected by space-craft, impact processes and their effects upon analysis of mineral materials. I am a frequent lead or co-author of peer-reviewed publications, and I present many research papers at international conferences.

Mineralogy and Petrology of Meteorites

 

Impact Damage to the Hubble Space Telescope

Between 1999 and 2004 I led efforts in the compositional characterisation of impactor origins in post-flight analyses of the damage to solar cells returned by shuttle Orbiter missions to the Hubble Space Telescope, with funding from the European Space Agency (ESA). To aid this work, before arrival at NHM, I employed a post-graduate research assistant. During ESA-funded research at NHM, I collaborated extensively with staff and a post-graduate student from ONERA, Toulouse

Stardust

Since 2004, I have shared leadership of the UK impact calibration efforts for interpretation of Stardust, a major NASA Discovery mission which returned the first cometary samples in January 2006. With Dr. Mark Burchell, his staff assistant and 2 research students (at the University of Kent, Canterbury), I have been responsible for the design of impact experiments and the characterisation of both projectiles and spacecraft-component targets to enable interpretation of the returned spacecraft material, and have been lead author on a suite of papers on this subject.  Our preparatory work has continued with major involvement in the Preliminary Examination stage of the NASA Stardust mission, close collaboration with staff in NASA and my supervision of Penny Wozniakiewicz, through 2005-2007. We have been named as collaborators in three Stardust Discovery Data Analysis Program (DDAP) applications for work from 2007 onwards.

I have diverse involvement in public outreach: I act as host for visitor groups to EMMA; am frequently involved in ‘behind-the-scenes tours’ and instrument demonstrations for other visitors; I write articles for NHM publications, provide materials for exhibitions, and give talks to public associations and societies, radio and television interviews.
