Citizen science

Public engagement with science

Building on very successful and innovative externally funded partnership projects such as:

and building on NHM resources (our collections, our staff and the unique Angela Marmont Centre for UK Biodiversity) a team from across the NHM is exploring how we can best link scientists and citizens to make identification a widely used public tool/good/science. This will not only have impacts on the forthcoming Green / carbon / knowledge economy but also deals with overarching concerns regarding the state of taxonomy and systematics clearly expressed by the House of Lords report in 2008.

For the foreseeable future our Citizen Science Programme will centre on TREES. We will - through the prism of UK Trees – develop a unique programme, which, if successful, can be easily grow in scope, geographically and taxonomically, in short in can and will be rolled out globally.

Trees are a very important component of ecosystems and biomes across the globe. They are essential in relation to the management of soils, water, carbon and biodiversity. A crucial component in any future carbon economy is identification and verification of carbon sinks. Trees play a crucial role but we are just beginning to address the challenges posed in relation to this. A significant percentage of our trees are found in urban areas and back gardens. It is crucial to involve citizens to understand the biodiversity of trees. This can only be addressed with scientists and citizens working together on technology-enabled platforms.

Our programme includes the provision of multi-faceted, multidisciplinary toolkits that can be adapted to suit customer needs. Key components are:
Face-to-face learning, courses and outreach activities at the
