Qualifications

March 2011: PhD in Animal Biology, Università la Sapienza, Rome, Italy. “Systematics and phylogeny of Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae)”.

April 2004: MSc in Natural Sciences, Università la Sapienza, Rome, Italy. “Spatio-temporal distribution of tachinid (Diptera, Tachinidae) communities in the State Nature Reserve of Bosco della Fontana (Italy)”.

Curation

As a curator I take care of the museum’s ca. 500,000 specimens of Acalyptratae. My job is to develop the collection through:

  • complete re-housing of the specimens
  • targeted fieldwork
  • digitisation and specimen-level databasing projects
  • exchanges and collaborations with acalyptrate specialists around the world

The collection, including the large quantity of unidentified material, is being actively worked on through loans, digital loans and visits by taxonomic experts.

Research

Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) porrecta

Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) porrecta

My research interests have been mainly focused on the calyptrate family Sarcophagidae. My PhD investigated the Palaearctic group of snail-eating flesh flies Heteronychia with a taxonomic revision and morphological cladistic analysis of its ca. 90 known species. Since then I have collaborated on projects exploring relationships within the megadiverse genus Sarcophaga.

Recent and ongoing fieldwork activities in sub-Saharan Africa have triggered a particular interest in this still relatively poorly known fauna. Current projects include the preparation of the chapter on Sarcophagidae for the Manual of Afrotropical Diptera and a molecular barcoding study of the earthworm predator Sarcophaga variegata and allies.
