I am a systematic evolutionary biologist conducting collections-based research that aims to document and understand the taxonomic, phenotypic and genetic diversity of vertebrates. The three groups of organisms that are the focus of my research (caecilian amphibians; burrowing snakes; Triassic archosaurian reptiles) are disparate, but united under the banner of amphibians and reptiles that have generally been understudied but which provide insights of broader evolutionary significance. The two extant groups at the heart of the majority of my current research (caecilians; burrowing snakes) occur in overlapping regions and similar habitats, and require the same dedicated field technique (digging) for collection. For these extant focal taxa, my research carries a substantial fieldwork component that also generates ecological data and helps to provide assessments of and recommendations for conservation.

Caecilians (Gymnophiona) are a magnificent group to study, beyond their obvious aesthetic appeal. With fewer than 200 living species it is possible to carry out revisionary systematic work across the group while also contributing substantially to knowledge on topics as broad as evolutionary biology, biogeography, ecology, reproduction and conservation.

Snakes form an increasing component of my research. Most of this work is on burrowing species – largely because these often poorly known animals are found with the same dedicated field technique (digging) required to study caecilians. Taxonomically I am especially interested in ‘anilioids’, Scolecophidia, and Acrochordidae. Most of my previous and unpublished research has been on systematics, including alpha taxonomy and phylogenetics. I have also begun to investigate the evolutionary biology of snake sensory systems.

My work on Triassic archosaurs contributes to the understanding of the early part of the radiation of archosaurs (dinosaurs, birds, pterosaurs, crocodilians and their closest extinct relatives). I aim to improve understanding of non-crown-group archosaurs, and of the stem members of the crocodilian-line of the crown group. In broad terms, my work contributes to a better understanding of the last common ancestor of birds and crocodiles, and allows more precise tests of how, when, and in what context the extraordinary, derived biology of these two living groups originated. My palaeontological work also addresses broader methodological issues in estimating phylogeny from morphological data, and assessing progress and constraints in phylogenetics.
