Research and fieldwork

Olson's Gap project, Brazil.

Martha in the field (Olson's Gap project, Parnaíba Basin, Brazil).

I am a vertebrate palaeontologist with PhD (King’s College London, 1991) and post-doctoral studies (Eberhart-Karl Tübingen Universität, Germany) in fish palaeontology. My first degree is in Biology and I have an interest and professional experience in nature conservation.

The main focus of my current research is the Palaeozoic and early Mesozoic vertebrates faunas from Brazil.

Parnaíba Basin, Brazil

Since 2011, I have been a member of the ‘Olson’s Gap’/I Dig Brazil field research project in North-eastern Brazil, lead by Juan Carlos Cisneros and Kenneth Angielczyc. The team comprises vertebrate palaeontologists from the USA, Argentina, Germany and South Africa and the UK and received funds from sponsoring bodies in Brazil, the USA, Germany and the Museum.

Three fieldwork seasons have been carried out to date on Late Palaeozoic rocks of the Parnaíba Basin, having received international media coverage including a series on the New York Times. Preliminary results of the project were presented at various international conferences and full publications on new tetrapod and fish faunas will be published in peer-reviewed journals.

Paraná Basin, Southern Brazil

I have a long-standing research interest and publications on the Palaeozoic fish faunas from the Paraná Basin in southern Brazil. My PhD thesis was on a permo-carboniferous ichthyofauna from the State of Santa Catarina and I continue studying fish fossils of Permian age. (See publications)

Woodeaton Quarry fossil salvage trip in 2012.

Woodeaton Quarry fossil salvage trip in 2012.

Woodeaton Quarry, Oxford, UK

I have organized and lead a number of departmental fieldtrips to the Woodeaton Quarry in Oxforshire during 2012-13. The Quarry contains the best exposure of Bathonian age rocks in England and a number of important fossils have been described from the site over the years, including dinosaur, shark, mammal, invertebrate and palynomorph material. The quarry will be land-filed in the next 10 years. The main aim of the fieldwork was to collect bulk samples from sediments of Bathonian age and recover vertebrate remains.  More than two tons of sediments have been processed far by David Ward, a Scientific Associate of the Museum. Post-graduate students and Museum scientists are currently studying the fossils.

Past palaeontological expeditions and field trips

These include numerous localities in Brazil, the UK, Germany, Sweden, Oman, Morocco, South Africa, Sweden and Antarctica (the two month James Scientific Cruise with the British Antarctic Survey in 1988-89) among others.
