Science strategy 2013 - 2017

A new age of discovery

Our new five-year science strategy, a new age of discovery, is designed to employ our unique expertise and collections to pursue a programme of scientific work that is distinctive, excellent and relevant

Our scientific mission is to answer questions of broad significance to science and society using our unique expertise and collections, and to share, communicate and apply our skills and findings.

Based on our three focal areas of activity

  • scientific discovery
  • infrastructure
  • engagement

The strategy identifies five major challenges:

  1. The digital NHM
  2. Origins, evolution and futures
  3. Biodiversity discovery
  4. Natural resources and hazards
  5. Science, society and skills
