Director of Science
Professor Ian Owens, Director of Science in the Natural History Museum's Darwin Centre.
The primary role of the Director of Science is to set the strategic direction of the scientific activities of the Natural History Museum and to ensure that it meets its national and international responsibilities and the wider needs of society.
The Director of Science is responsible for
- both earth and life sciences
- collections of some 70 million items from all parts of the world
- library and information service
- approximately 350 staff and 150 post-graduate students in these areas.
The role involves
- ensuring collections and libraries are well cared for and accessible
- making research both relevant and of international quality
- shaping scientific culture within the Museum to shape
- developing and foster national and international partnerships
- allocate resources

Prof Ian Owens
Researching the ecological and genetic basis of diversification, using empirical, molecular and comparative methods, using approaches developed in the fields of ecology, behaviour, quantitative genetics and evolution and vertebrates, particularly birds as study organisms.
