Find out what to expect during your Cocoon visit in the Darwin Centre.
Scientists have recently moved into this modern research building, named after Charles Darwin. It has the new equipment and space they need. At its heart is the cocoon building, a state-of-the-art collections storage facility.
You will visit the Cocoon experience, which is a unique opportunity to get an insight into scientific research at the Museum. Read the information below to help you get the most out of your visit.
Collect a NaturePlus card at reception when you arrive. You can use the card to save content from the interactive exhibits and access them later on the website.
Secondary school students can try our A Day in the Life online activities, based on the Cocoon experience. You can start them before your visit.

Lifts take you up to the 7th floor where you begin the Cocoon experience. You finish on the 5th floor. However, we recommend that you arrange to meet your group back on the ground floor, rather than waiting on the 5th floor.
There are limited toilet facilities so please use the ones in the main Museum building before coming to the Darwin Centre.
All school activities must be booked in advance. To book, please call our school bookings line between 08.30-16.00, Monday to Friday during term-time, or 10.00-13.00 during the school holidays.
