Labels are removed from beneath the specimen. The specimen and label are placed next to each other in a box.The box is backed with a neutral grey Plastazote® base.
The specimen is photographed using a Canon DSLR fitted with a macro lens.
The labels and specimen are reassembled and placed into a new, purpose-built entomological drawer. The team is also taking the opportunity to rehouse the collections as part of the project, funded by the Cockayne Trust.
Data from the label are entered into the collections database using a custom built data entry interface.
The locality data on the labels is georeferenced to a geographic centroid that can be mapped.
