Lepidoptera research

Our research focuses on the taxonomy, phylogeny, zoogeography and evolution of snout moths (subfamily Phycitinae), swift moths (Hepialoidea), hawkmoths (Sphingidae) and cutworm moths (Noctuoidea). We are also developing digital 3D image software to study the small-scale structure (morphology) of these insects. 

Hymenoptera research

Hymenoptera research at the Museum is concerned mainly with the evolution and diversity of bees and parasitoid wasps. 

Sternorrhyncha research

We are researching Sternorrhyncha by collating global databases of psyllid and whitefly species and their host-plant associations and analysing patterns of psyllid and host-plant evolution.

Coleoptera research

Our research falls into two categories the evolution of diversity in Coleoptera and research into the largest family, the weevils.

Fresh water insect research

We are researching the impact of environmental change on freshwater systems, over various time frames, by following changes in insect diversity and abundance (especially Chironomidae).
