Diagnostic Features
  • Test circular in outline; depressed in profile
  • Apical disc hemicyclic with ocular plates I and V usually insert
  • Ambulacra polygeminate with 6-8 pore-pairs to a compound plate, arranged in an arc; arcs separated by row of small tubercles. One primary tubercle to each plate.
  • Ambulacra not expanding orally to form phyllodes but narrow slightly
  • Interambulacral plates with primary tubercle flanked by much smaller secondary tubercles. Primary tubercles prominent especially aborally
  • Spines no more than half the test diameter
  • Globiferous pedicellariae with single lateral tooth and no neck

Monotypic. Treated here as a subjective junior synonym of Heliocidaris

Remarks

Mortensen (1943, p. 337) , although placing Toxocidaris erythrogramma in the genus Heliocidaris, noted that the two differed significantly and were possibly not congeneric. H. tuberculatus differs from T. erythrogramma in having adoral ambulacra more strongly petaloid and it has a very different development.
