A proposal was made to place Elachistidae Bruand, 1850 on the Official list of Family-Group Names in Zoology by Nielsen & Nye, 1988, Case 2481, Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature 45 (1) : 28.
Nye & Fletcher (1991) stated:-
In order to conserve the existing usage of Elachista Treitschke, 1833, and Elachistidae Braund, 1850, in their universally accepted sense, an application has been submitted to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature by Nielson & Nye, 1988, Bull. zool. Nom. 45: 28, asking it to suppress the name Elachista Kollar, 1832, for the purposes of both the Principle of Priority and the Principle of Homonymy. For the same reason the Commission has also been asked to set aside all previous designation of type-species for Elachista Treitschke, 1833, prior to that of Meyrick, 1915.
Elachista Kollar, 1832, has been suppressed to conserve the name Elachista Treitschke, 1833; Opinion 1557, 1989, Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature 46 (3) : 206. The type-species of Elachista was confirmed as E. bifasciella Treitschke, 1833. Original proposed for conservation by Nielsen & Nye, 1988, Case 2481, Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature 45 (1) : 28.
