Chionellidea was established as an objective replacement name for Chionella Amsel, 1935, a junior homonym.

Chionellidea was etablished in the Scythrididae; it was transferred to the Symmocidae by Sattler, 1973, Bull. Br. Mus. nat. Hist. (Ent.) 28: 183.
