Fletcher (1979) stated:-

Asaphodes was proposed as the objective replacement name for Thyone Meyrick, 1883; it was again proposed by Meyrick, 1886, Trans. N.Z. Inst. 18: 184.

Pennithera Viidalepp, 1980 was established to denote a subgenus of Asaphodes Meyrick, 1885 and was raised to generic level by Inoue, Sugi, Kuroko, Moriuti and Kawabe, 1982, Moths of Japan Vol. 2 : 283.

Parsons et al. (1999) included 39 species in the genus ASAPHODES.
