This genus was originally proposed in the Drepanidae, but has since been transferred to the Geometridae; its first published use in this family appears to have been by Prout, 1938, in Seitz, Gross-Schmett. Erde 16: 125.

Parsons et al. (1999) included CIROPTERYX Holland, 1893 as a junior synonym of THENOPA Walker, 1855 [November 10].
