Incorrect type-species: Phalaena sepiaria Hufnagel, 1767, a name not originally included in Tephronia, and not linked with one of the originally included names when designated by Lhomme, [1930] 1923-1935, Cat. Lépid. Fr. et Belg. 1: 419 and by Wehrli, 1943, in Seitz, Gross-Schmett. Erde 4 (Suppl.): 554.

Parsons et al. (1999) included GYMNOSPILE Gumppenberg, 1887; and MNIOPHILA Boisduval, 1840 as junior synonyms of TEPHRONIA Hübner, 1825.

Parsons et al. (1999) included 9 species and 11 subspecies (inc. nominates) in the genus TEPHRONIA.
