This genus was originally proposed in the Lithosiidae (now Arctiidae), but has since been transferred to the Geometridae; its first published use in this family appears to have been by Warren, 1894, Novit. zool. 1: 412.

Parsons et al. (1999) included DICHOSTREPSIA Warren, 1895; and HOMOEOCHROMA Felder & Felder, 1862 as junior synonyms of STENELE Walker, 1854 [May 13].

Parsons et al. (1999) included 7 species in the genus STENELE.
