Smicropus was proposed as the objective replacement name for Micropus Hübner, 1818.

Parsons et al. (1999) included MICROPINUS Kirby, 1912; MICROPUS Hübner, 1818; and SCAPTIA Walker, 1854 as junior synonyms of SMICROPUS Warren, 1895.

Parsons et al. (1999) included 10 species and 4 subspecies (inc. nominates) in the genus SMICROPUS.
