The name Riodina was introduced by Westwood as a replacement for the name Erycina Fabricius, 1807, which is invalid under the Law of Homonymy.

RIODINA was included within the subfamily LYCAENIDAE: RIODININAE by Ackery et al., in Kristensen (1999), but within the RIODINIDAE: RIODININAE by Lamas (2008).
