Rhanidophora was established in the `Chelonides', now Arctiidae; it was placed in the Liparidae, now Lymantriidae, by Kirby, 1892, Synonymic Cat. Lepid. Heterocera 1: 462; and was transferred to the Noctuidae by Swinhoe, 1903, Trans. ent. Soc. Lond. 1903: 498.

Poole (1989) included RHANIDOPHORA in the subfamily OPHIDERINAE, treated as CALPINAE by Kitching & Rawlins, in Kristensen (1999).

Poole (1989) included ENYDRA Walker,1862 as a junior synonym of RHANIDOPHORA Wallengren, 1858.
