Ptichodis was proposed primarily for P. bistrigata, but Geometra palumbaria [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775, was also included for comparison.

Fletcher (1979) stated:-

Ptichodis is included in this catalogue as it is linked with one of the early uses of Petrophora Hübner, [1811].

Poole (1989) included PTICHODIS (as PTICHODES) in the subfamily CATOCALINAE.
