Fletcher (1979) stated:-

This genus was originally proposed in the Nyctemeridae (now Arctiidae), but has since been transferred to the Geometridae, where it was placed by Leach, 1899, Trans. ent. Soc. Lond. 1899: 219.

P. aterrima is curently treated as a subspecies of Phalaena tibiale Esper, 1791, Die Schmett. 4: pl. 164, fig.2.
