Archaeolepidae was designated a new family (of Lepidoptera incertae sedis) with the type-genus Archaeolepis, from the Lower Jurassic, Whalley, 1985, Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History) Geology 39 (3) : 159.

The presence of wing scales is supposed to indicate that this fossil is lepidopteran (Kristensen & Skalski 1998; Grimaldi & Engel 2005). See also ARCHAEOLEPIS and included species.
