Cowan (1968: 14) stated:-
PROTHOE, line 2: "Hübner, " should read; Godart, [July 1824]
Cowan (1968: 19) stated:-
Godart described and illustrated Nymphalis franck in Mém. Soc. Linn. Paris 2 (which I have not seen). Had that volume appeared in 1822 as Hemming alleged in his Allancastria entry (see Note 3 above [See Cowan's note for Allancastria Bryk, 1934]), this would have been the earliest description of francki. But the issue was delayed till after 1824. Meanwhile Godart had again described and dedicated "Nymphalis franck" in Latreille & Godart, [July 1824], Enc. Méth. (Zool.) 9 (2) : 825. Hübner's beautiful plate for Prothoe franckii appeared on some unknown date between January and 23 December 1824, and under Article 21 (e) of the Code must be given the latter date. Thus for the genus Prothoe Hübner [December 1824] is correct, and the species should be known as francki Godart [July 1824].

Cowan (1970: 17) stated:-
"GODART Since writing Annot. Rhop. 1968 (cf. pp. 16, n. 3; 19, n. 16) it has been found that volume 2 of Mém. Soc. Linn. Paris was never published. Only a proof copy is known, which contains no plates (see J. Soc. Biblphy. nat. Hist. 5 (2) : 152-154). The species concerned were described by Godart in [July 1824], Encyc. Méth. (Zool.) 9 (2), and that is the correct reference.
PROTHOE: Nymphalis franck [nec franckii] Godart, : 825."
[Therefore type-species changed from Prothoe franckii Hübner, , Samml. exot. Schmett. 2 : pl. (in Hemming, 1967, p.380) to above].
Prothoe Hübner, was designated as the type-genus for the new tribe Prothini and new subfamily Prothoinae (Charaxidae) [Prothoe is now placed in the Nymphalidae, Charaxinae] by Rydon, 1971, Entomologist's Record and Journal of Variation 83 : 287, 286 [respectively] Prothoinae is not adopted here.
PROTHOE was included within the subfamily NYMPHALIDAE: CHARAXINAE by Ackery et al., in Kristensen (1999).
The higher classification used here follows Lamas (2008).
