Fletcher & Nye (1982) stated:-

Sphinx strigilis has been mistakenly attributed by authors to Drury, 1770, Illust. nat. Hist. exot. Insects 1: 62, pl.28, fig.4, but volume 1 of the work was published without scientific names. The Index to volume 1 which included the scientific names was published with volume 2 in 1773.

PROTAMBULYX was included within the subfamily SPHINGIDAE: SMERINTHINAE by Lemaire & Minet, in Kristensen (1999).

Kitching & Cadiuo (2000) list AMBULYX Burmeister 1855; AMBULYX Herrich-Schäffer, 1854; AMBULYX Lucas, 1857 and AMBULYX Walker, 1856 as junior names of PROTAMBULYX Rothschild & Jordan, 1903.
