This genus was originally proposed in the Geometridae, but has since been transferred to the Noctuidae, where it was placed by Moore, 1877, Proc. zool. Soc. Lond. 1877: 612.

Poole (1989) included PLEURONA in the subfamily OPHIDERINAE, treated as CALPINAE by Kitching & Rawlins, in Kristensen (1999).

Poole (1989) included 4 species in the genus PLEURONA.
