Poole (1989) included PLAGIOMIMICUS in the subfamily AMPHIPYRINAE, subsequently restricted to the genus AMPHIPYRA by Kitching & Rawlins, in Kristensen (1999). Other genera formerly treated in the subfamily AMPHIPYRINAE are treated as HADENINAE by Kitching & Rawlins (loc. cit.). However, Kitching & Rawlins, in Kristensen (1999) included PLAGIOMIMICUS in the subfamily STIRIINAE.

Poole (1989) included ANTAPLAGA Grote, 1877; POLENTA Morrison, 1880; STIBADIUM Grote, 1882; and NEOPHAEUS Dyar, 1918 as junior synonyms of PLAGIOMIMICUS Grote, 1873.

Poole (1989) included 37 species in the genus PLAGIOMIMICUS.
