This genus was originally proposed in the Lithosiidae (now Arctiidae), but has since been transferred to the Geometridae; its first published use in this family appears to have been by Druce, 1890, in Jameson, Story of the Rear Column of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition: 451.

Parsons et al. (1999) included HYMENOCHARTA Warren, 1897; and TUERCKHEIMIA Dewitz, 1881 as junior synonyms of PITTHEA Walker, 1854 [May 13].

Parsons et al. (1999) included 21 species and 6 subspecies (inc. nominates) in the genus PITTHEA.
