Nomenclaturally available from 1893, but without generic diagnosis until Warren, 1894, Novit. zool. 1: 397. The type-species designation accompanying the diagnosis is invalid because of the earlier monotypy.

Parsons et al. (1999) included STEIROPHORA Warren, 1897; and SYNNEURODES Warren, 1899 junior synonyms of PHTHONOLOBA Warren, 1893.

Parsons et al. (1999) included 16 species in the genus PHTHONOLOBA.
